Mt. Moosilauke (1939) - The Mysterious Light

". . . You ask about any Moosilauke experiences with animals. I could fantasize a "Doc Benton" story about the grizzly bear I met on the Glencliff trail. (It didn't happen!)

What did occur was less spectacular but more bizarre. At sunset time the crew was in the Moosilauke Summit House. I was upstairs looking out of a window when I saw a strange "light" moving about on the summit grass. From a distance it was impossible to distinguish what it was - no semblance of an animal.

We went out to inspect. It was a porcupine which had been rummaging in our garbage dump and had stuck his head in a #10 tin can. He couldn't dislodge it, so he was wandering aimlessly around and the sun reflected on it - thus the "light" we saw.

We gingerly extricated him, made a small cage in which he remained for about a week. . . ."
