". . . Mr. Editor: The celebration of the glorious Fourth upon the summit of Moosilauke Mountain, and the opening of the Prospect House, was a perfect success. There were present about one thousand people. Over one hundred of whom were ladies. A sumptuous dinner was provided by the proprietors of the Prospect House. Thomas J. Smith, Esq. of Wentworth, N.H., delivered one of the best addresses to which we have ever had the pleasure of listening. The Newbury Cornet Band were in attendance during the day, and discoursed music in their finest style. Taking all things in consideration, it was one of the best celebrations we have ever attended.

The Newbury Cornet Band
The Newbury Cornet Band was organized in 1857 or 1858. Henry W. Bailey was chosen its leader, and continued as such during its existence. The first leader was Mr. C.H. Clark, a noted circus band leader. There were twelve members. During the civil war several of the members were in the army, and the band was broken up. In 1863, after the return of Mr. Bailey from the war, it was re-organized, and maintained till about 1880. A notable instance of its furnishing music was at the dedication of the Summit House on Moosilauke, where more than a thousand people had gathered, on July 4th, 1860. . . ."
