Mt. Moosilauke (1870) - Mountain Road Company

Joesph A. Dodge". . . In 1870 there was a decided demand for a carriage road of a comfortable nature. To quote William Little again, 'This road company was incorporated at the June session of the Legislature, 1870. John E. Lyon, Joseph A. Dodge, Daniel Q. Clement were made the 'body politic'. The corporation immediately proceeded to build the road, and the work thus far has been under the superintendence of D.Q. and James Clement. They have pushed the enterprise with a great deal of energy, and the road is nearly complete.'

This statement of Little's seems rather optimistic, for in 1872 it became necessary for the State Legislature to again grant the town of Warren the privilege of contributing not over $800 toward the construction of the road. This must have overcome the difficulties as the road was completed about that time. As late as 1881 "the Moosilauke Mountain Road Company obtained an addition franchise to build 'three bridle paths or carriage roads' from various points to the summit of the mountain, but it does not appear that any work was done in consequence. . . ."
