Mt. Moosilauke (1883) - Merrill's Mountain Home
". . . The Merrill Mountain House is the last habitation on the road to the summit, and is within a few yards of the gate that opens to the road built by a corporation, which collects toll of every person and carriage passing over it.
Here fifty years ago the senior Merrill (deceased - father of Amos, the present proprietor) made him a home, cleared up a farm, and almost from necessity accommodated those who passed his door in going up or returning from the mountain, and, at length, in a very natural way, was established the business of keeping a summer boardinghouse, for the gratification of those who were attracted to the place solely on account of the mountains, forests and streams so near at hand on every side. Here, too, we rest, at the close of our journey. . . ."
