Mt. Moosilauke (1899) - Asleep at the Top
". . . Two domesticated animals spent their summer on the heights, - a white dog, the companion of the manager of the hotel, and a ribby, black cow that supplied the table with an abundance of rich milk. The mountain air made both animals appear lazy, for the dog, though reported as quite lively in the valley, spent most of his time dozing, and the cow has been seen to chew her cud and ruminate for hours at a time. Indeed, one observer declared he found her at dinner time in the identical tracks she had been left in at breakfast. . . ."
