Mt. Moosilauke (1900) - Agassiz Verse
". . . Along the myriad byways of northern New England were frequent springs provided by nature for the benefit of man and beast alike - and for a few years, perhaps, for the over-heated radiators of the few automobilists daring the back-roads of New Hampshire. Around the turn of the century, the Reverend Johnny Johnson owned a small summer cottage in North Woodstock, not far from the Agassiz Basin. He had greatly admired the neat paths and trail-side shrines of Switzerland, and decided to bring these traits to his adopted town. How many were finally erected and their fate is unknown. Quite likely these were placed in similar "reflective"spots around the area.
The spring pictured here was probably located close to the Agassiz Basin along the old North Woodstock-Warren Road (now Rt. 112). In verse not unpleasing those stopping along the roadside were both refreshed and counselled:
O Traveller! Stay thy weary feet:
Take from this fountain pure and sweet,
A Cup of Water in His Name -
It flows for rich and poor the same.
Then go thy way remembering still
The wayside spring beneath the hill."
